I've been doing this for 2 weeks but I feel just as lousy as ever. Also no sugar, only lactose-free milk, no wheat- just gluten-free bread. So for now, I'm trying Caprystatin, grapefruit-seed extract in liquid form. She mentioned the 'shake' with psyllium and Bentonite but the Bentonite backed me up too much and then it all came violently at once so I scrapped that idea. It was actually my massage therapist- who does medically-oriented massage and detected inflammation- who suggested SIBO or 'intestinal dysbiosis' (same thing?).She mentioned Caprylic acid (I just started taking an enteric-coated one- Caprystatin). There isn’t the recurrence of symptoms seen with drugs like rifaximin.I haven't been tested for SIBO but seem to have symptoms that make it a definite possibility. In my clinical experience, grapefruit seed extract and oregano oil, when combined with other antimicrobials, work beautifully for irritable bowel syndrome. You’ll want to know what changes occurred to your gut bacteria as a result of the rifaximin. If use rifaximin, I highly recommend you do a stool test before and then several months after rifaximin treatment. You need to think carefully about what medications do to your beneficial bacteria. In most cases, that the collateral damage is worse than anything. I absolutely believe that pharmaceuticals are not the right approach for nearly all the people I see in the clinic. I’ve noticed the same recurrence problem with metronidazole (Flagyl). I read a study that showed within 18 to 19 months, 100% of patients experienced a recurrence of SIBO. Many patients taking rifaximin not only didn’t recover, but they got worse. As for using rifaximin to treat intestinal problems, I used to recommend it until I saw the results. Once you know the “lay of the land” in your gut, you can choose an effective treatment. Get a stool test to find out if you’re lacking beneficial bacteria or have some other type of intestinal imbalance.
